Desires Are Now Memories- Isidora

The City on Coastline- Despina

The sailor discerns the city on the coastline as camels from whose pack hang bags of candied fruits and sees himself being taken away from the desert of the sea, toward oases of fresh water in the palm trees, toward palaces where girls are dancing barefoot, moving their arms, half-hidden by their veils, and half-revealed.

The City Hidden Behind Clouds- Baucis

Nothing of the city Baucis, hidden behind clouds, touches the ground except its long flamingo legs. But the inhabitants examine the earth leaf by leaf with their spyglasses aimed downwards contemplating with fascination their own absence.

The City of Unexpected- Hypatia

In the city of Hypatia, when a traveler wants no stimulus or nourishment save music, he knows it is to be sought in the cemeteries where the musicians hide in the tombs.

The City at Distance- Irene

The city, shrouded in milky mist, brings bangs of firecrackers at one time and explosions from a civil war at other times. Travelers on the plateau look down from the height and conjecture about what is happening. Irene is a name for a city in the distance.
